FLETCHER, N.C. (Aug. 29, 2014) — The N.C. Wildlife Resources Commission’s exhibit at the Mountain State Fair will have fun and educational exhibits for everyone in the family to enjoy.
The fair, which will be open Sept. 5-14, is located in Fletcher in Henderson County, just west of Asheville. The Commission’s exhibit will open from 3-8 p.m. Monday through Thursday, and from 10 a.m. until 8 p.m. Friday through Sunday.
Hands-on activities, such as the magnetic “fishing pond” and the suction cup archery areas, hone the outdoor skills of younger attendees, while a map that identifies places to go trout fishing and displays on fisheries management and freshwater mussels will be of interest to adults.
New for this year is a boater safety exhibit where kids can grab a lifejacket, also known as a personal flotation device, and practice fishing from a boat that is complete with working lights.
A new exhibit on the Carolina northern flying squirrel, a small cinnamon-brown mammal found only in North Carolina’s mountains, will include replicas of the jumping posts the Commission installed along the Cherohala Skyway to help squirrels avoid traffic when crossing the skyway.
Back by popular demand is the mobile aquarium, which features twin 300-gallon tanks with coldwater and warmwater fishes. Commission staff also will be giving away the perennially popular button — a traditional state fair keepsake, which features a tundra swan this year. The button is free, along with other wildlife-related items, such as kids’ fishing coloring books, fish identification guides, and fish stickers and tattoos.
