ALEIGH, N.C. (Dec. 14, 2016) —The N.C. Wildlife Resources Commission is holding a public hearing on Dec. 20 to take comments on two proposed no-wake zone rule amendments in Carteret County and technical corrections to text of the no-wake zone rules for New Hanover County.

The hearing, which begins at 10 a.m., will be held on the 5th floor of the Commission’s headquarters, located at 1751 Varsity Drive in Raleigh.

The Commission is requesting a permanent rule that would clarify and correct the no-wake zone boundary for Taylor’s Creek in Beaufort. This permanent rule is to replace the temporary rule the Commission approved in July and would go into effect April 1, 2017. The rule should minimize confusion about the eastern boundary of the no-wake zone, at the tip of Carrot Island. Download a hi-resolution image of the no-wake boundary.

The Town of Cedar Point is requesting a permanent rule that would establish a no-wake zone in a portion of the canal at Dolphin Bay Estates where it meets the White Oak River in Cedar Point. A shoal at the mouth of the canal makes it necessary for boaters to enter and exit on plane so the no-wake zone would start 30 yards inside the mouth of the canal and extend the entire length of the canal.  The Town of Cedar Point held public hearings earlier this year and received public support for this no-wake zone. This rule would be effective April 1, 2017.

The Commission also is requesting a permanent rule to incorporate technical corrections into the water safety rules for New Hanover County. The technical changes will not affect the existing no-wake zone rule for New Hanover County and are simply to correct marker numbers, add GPS coordinates, and clarify text descriptions.
