North Carolina CATCH (Caring for Aquatics Through Conservation Habits) is an aquatic resources education program that provides workshop training to adults to enable them to work with youth in discovering aquatic environments through learning activities, educational materials, aquatic field trips and fishing experiences. The CATCH program targets 12-year-olds in terms of reading level, program concepts and skills. However, it can be integrated into lessons and activities for youth from ages 8-15.
Components of CATCH The major components of CATCH include an instructor's guide, student handbook, posters, fish identification cards, fish mobiles, information on the Commission's Tackle Loaner Program and a fisheries video. These materials emphasize conservation habits, outdoor ethics, fish and aquatic species information, water safety tips and practical fishing skills. Middle school teachers, curriculum specialists, scout leaders, recreation therapists, park personnel, camp counselors, fishing and environmental club members, 4-H leaders and other youth leaders will find these materials adaptable and appropriate. Because the CATCH program is interdisciplinary, it can be used to meet many middle school competency goals and objectives.
Scouting and CATCH Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts and Scout leaders can participate in CATCH training and activities at all age levels. Scouts can earn badges and meet requirements needed to complete projects for advancement. Scout leaders can earn adult training certification through CATCH.
How to Obtain CATCH Materials CATCH materials can be obtained free of charge; however, educators or youth leaders must attend and successfully complete a CATCH Instructor Training Workshop prior to obtaining the free materials. The Conservation Education Division coordinates the workshops, and there is no cost to enroll. Teachers receive one CEU credit for attending a 10-hour workshop.
