Roanoke River Creel Survey Information:

Hickory Shad Update: In the upper Roanoke, anglers continue to catch numerous Hickory Shad in the area of Weldon. We intercepted 19 boating parties on Saturday, March 28 during the creel session at Weldon and number of Hickory Shad reported caught totaled 1,230 fish! Similar reports of “hundred fish days” continued throughout this week by both boat and bank anglers fishing for Hickory Shad at Weldon. Anglers also reported catching a few American Shad near Weldon mixed in with all those Hickory Shad.

Striped Bass Update: A few striped bass were being caught in the upper Roanoke River near Scotland Neck and Weldon, yet the vast majority of harvest in the Roanoke River continued to be in the lower Roanoke River. Our creel clerks documented harvest of Striped Bass in the lower Roanoke River near Jamesville and Williamston this past week. Anglers were using both artificial and cut bait to catch striped bass in good numbers with striped bass harvested between 18 and 22 inches weighing between 2 and 4 pounds. Anglers also caught and released a good number of striped bass that ranged from 15 to 17 inches.

In addition, anglers caught blue catfish at Williamston and Jamesville. Anglers also reported catching a few White Perch and Largemouth Bass at Jamesville.
