RALEIGH, N.C. (Aug. 31, 2015) – Beginning Sept. 1, sportsmen can obtain applications for permit waterfowl hunts online, by visiting a Wildlife Service Agent or by calling 1 (888) 248-6834, Mon.-Fri., 8 a.m.-5 p.m. The deadline for the majority of permit hunts is Oct. 1.
The 2015-16 waterfowl season has two new waterfowl hunting opportunities that are being offered in the coastal region. With the addition of the Texas Plantation Tract in Tyrrell County in the Commission’s Game Land Program, waterfowl hunters will have a new area they can apply to hunt. This tract, administered through J. Morgan Futch Game Land in Tyrrell County, will feature six waterfowl blinds on managed impoundments. Five blinds will be open to all waterfowl hunters, with one blind designated for Hunting Heritage Apprentice Permit holder use only. To qualify for the apprentice blind, at least one applicant must a hold a valid Hunting Heritage Apprentice Permit and be partnered with a hunter who is 18 years old or older and who is licensed to hunt waterfowl in North Carolina.
“We are excited about our new Texas Plantation purchase and the opportunities it will provide our waterfowl hunters,” said Tommy Hughes, coastal ecoregion supervisor. “In addition to providing additional hunting opportunities, we are designating one of our waterfowl blinds for Hunting Heritage Apprentice Permit holder use only. We hope this will encourage a person who has never hunted waterfowl to partner with an experienced waterfowler to get exposed to this exciting, and many times addicting, hunting opportunity.”
