Women’s Hunter Education Course Offered in Raleigh
Wildlife Commission will offer a hunter education course for women in Raleigh on Nov. 1-2.

RALEIGH, N.C. (Sept. 25, 2013) — The N.C. Wildlife Resources Commission will offer a hunter education course for women in Raleigh on Nov. 1-2.

The free course is offered on a first-come, first-served basis with limited space available and pre-registration required. The course’s two segments will be conducted in the auditorium of the Centennial Campus Center for Wildlife Education, located 1751 Varsity Drive, Raleigh. The Nov. 1 segment is scheduled for 6-9 p.m. The Nov. 2 segment is scheduled for 8:30 a.m. until 5 p.m.

The women-only course is the Wildlife Commission’s first attempt at such a class through its Hunter Education Program and Home From The Hunt™ campaign.

“There is an increase in female participation in hunting, shooting sports and outdoor recreation, especially here in North Carolina,” said Carissa Shelton, a Commission hunter education specialist who will lead the course. “This session will provide the standard lessons of the Hunter Education Program, but will do so in a gender-specific setting. We hope it creates an appealing atmosphere for those who prefer it.”

The first 35 women to pre-register will receive upon graduation a complimentary copy of “Call of the Mild: Learning to Hunt My Own Dinner,” by Lily Raff McCaulo. All graduates will receive hunter certification recognized in all 50 states, U.S. territories and many other countries.

“Hunter education is more than a firearms safety course,” said Casey Williams, a Commission wildlife educator. “Instruction covers conservation and wildlife identification, outdoor survival and first aid, types of hunting and methods of hunting. It is thorough and fun, and a great introduction to the many outdoor activities available to us.”

The Centennial Campus Center for Wildlife Education is located on the first floor of the Wildlife Commission’s headquarters at 1751 Varsity Drive on N.C. State University’s Centennial Campus in Raleigh. It is one of four learning centers operated across the state by the Wildlife Commission, and features interactive exhibits highlighting Piedmont wildlife species and habitats.
