Wildlife Commission Urges Waterfowl Hunters to Practice Boating Safety
Avoid cottons and always wear a life jacket while hunting waterfowl from a vessel.

RALEIGH, N.C. (Dec. 11, 2018) — As duck season reopens on Dec. 15, the N.C. Wildlife Resources Commission’s Home From The Hunt™ campaign reminds waterfowl hunters to take basic safety precautions while hunting from a vessel.

“A boating accident in cold weather can quickly lead to hypothermia,” said Chet Clark, the Commission’s eastern outreach manager. “It’s imperative to dress appropriately, wearing wool or other synthetic materials, and always wear a personal floatation device. A small amount of precaution can mean the difference between life and death in the event of an accident.”

The Commission also recommends that hunters:

  • Be aware that small, flat-bottom vessels are prone to capsizing and swamping.
  • Keep hunting dogs prone in the center of the boat.
  • Store equipment properly and keep it evenly distributed.
  • Never move about the boat with a loaded shotgun.
  • Don't overload the boat, especially with passengers.
  • Always let someone know your whereabouts and an approximate return time.
  • In the event of capsizing or swamping, stay with the boat and use it as a floatation device.
