Wildlife Commission Seeks Public Input for Chowan Swamp Game Land and Chowan Game Land

GATESVILLE, N.C. (Jan. 28, 2015) — The N.C. Wildlife Resources Commission is holding a public meeting on Feb. 16, in Gatesville to seek input in developing a management plan for the Chowan Swamp Game Land located in Bertie, Gates and Hertford counties and Chowan Game Land located Chowan County.

The meeting is scheduled for 7 p.m., and will be held at Merchant’s Millpond State Park Visitors Center, 176 Millpond Road (GPS coordinates: 36.437105, -76.701585).

Wildlife Commission staff will use public input from the meeting to help guide management and user activities on Chowan Swamp Game Land and Chowan Game Land for the next 10 years.  Chowan Swamp Game Land encompasses more than 30,000 acres along the Chowan River. Chowan Game Land encompasses 30 acres next to U.S. 17 and Pembroke Creek.

“We are seeking input from all users of the Chowan and Chowan Swamp game lands and others who are interested in how the property is managed,” said Lands Program Manager Isaac Harrold. “This meeting is not just for hunters and anglers. It is for wildlife watchers and photographers, birding groups, hikers, and others who have interest in Chowan Swamp Game Land or Chowan Game Land. Everyone is encouraged to provide input.”

The Commission also will accept comments and suggestions from people who cannot attend the meeting. Beginning Feb. 16, people can submit comments regarding the Chowan Swamp Game Land and Chowan Game Land management plan at www.ncwildlife.org.
