BREVARD, N.C. (Jan. 27, 2014) — The N.C. Wildlife Resources Commission is offering several outdoors-related clinics in February through the Pisgah Center for Wildlife Education in Transylvania County.

All events are free and require pre-registration on a first-come, first-serve basis.

• Fly Selection 101 – Feb. 7, 10 a.m.-noon.  For ages 12 to adult. Spend the morning with staff learning various types of fly patterns and the “when, where and how” to use them on different rivers and lakes.
• Fly-Tying: Level I – Feb. 10, 9 a.m.-noon. For ages 12 to adult. Spend a relaxing morning with experienced fly-tiers who teach the fundamentals of fly-tying. Work at your own pace to tie a basic pattern. Equipment and materials are provided.
• Nature Nuts: Fred the Fish – Feb. 12 & 24, 9-11 a.m. For ages 4-7. Join staff in exploring the world of “Fred the Fish” to learn how various types of pollution affect fish in a mountain stream. 
• Eco Explorers: Fly-Tying – Feb. 12 & 24, 1-3 p.m. For ages 8-13. Enjoy a morning learning the fundamentals and art of fly-tying. Work at your own pace to tie basic patterns under the guidance of experienced instructors. Equipment and materials are provided. Limited to eight participants.
• Casting: Level I – Feb. 14, 10 a.m.-3 p.m. For ages 12 and up. Take an introductory class on various casting techniques, with experienced instructors assisting students to learn at their own pace. This class is held at Lake Imaging in DuPont State Recreational Forest. All equipment and materials are provided. Bring a lunch.

The Pisgah Center for Wildlife Education is located near Brevard, just south of Asheville, alongside the Davidson River in Transylvania County. The center features nature trails and five large aquariums representing different aquatic habitats.Visitors to the center also can walk next door to the Bobby N. Setzer Fish Hatchery, where trout are raised in 54 raceways. The center’s hours of operation through March are Monday through Saturday, 8 a.m.-4:45 p.m.
