RALEIGH, N.C. (Feb. 24, 2015) — The N.C. Wildlife Resources Commission has changed the location for the District 2 Youth Hunter Education Skills Tournament on March 14 to the Pitt County Wildlife Club in Pitt County.
District 2 includes Pitt, Beaufort, Greene, Lenoir, Duplin, Pender, New Hanover, Onslow, Jones, Carteret, Pamlico and Craven counties. The Pitt County Wildlife Club is located at 3029 Highway 222 East, Greenville, N.C.
This district-level competition for hundreds of middle school and high school students in rifle, shotgun and archery marksmanship was originally scheduled for the New Hanover County Law Enforcement Officers Association Range in Castle Hayne, in New Hanover County.
“Changes to the range at Castle Hayne necessitated the changing of venues,” said local Hunter Education Specialist Chris Kent. “We want to thank the New Hanover County Law Enforcement Officers Association for providing such a great facility for us in the past, and we want to thank the Pitt County Wildlife Club for accommodating our 2015 competition on such short notice.”
Teams are organized within public and private schools, while home-schooled students and teams representing organizations such as 4-H or FFA also can compete, provided they meet eligibility requirements. Winning teams advance to the state championship tournament, which will be held at the Millstone 4-H Center near Ellerbe on April 25.
While the Youth Hunter Education Skills Tournaments are for students 18 years old and younger, the Wildlife Commission offers free hunter education courses throughout the state for all ages. For more information on this or other conservation programs for youth, go to www.ncwildlife.org.
