LAKE GASTON, N.C. (July 27, 2018) – As the N.C. Department of Transportation begins a project to renovate Eaton Ferry Bridge on Lake Gaston, the N.C. Wildlife Resources Commission will provide assistance with a water safety plan designed to protect both boaters and construction workers. These renovations will affect marine traffic for the duration of the project, which is scheduled to begin after Labor Day weekend and conclude next summer. To increase boating safety at this location, buoys will be installed as soon as possible to designate a No-Wake Zone from shore-to-shore within 50 yards on each side of the bridge. In No-Wake Zones, vessels are required to travel at idling speed, creating no appreciable wake. While the repairs are conducted, marine traffic will be limited to two 80-foot spans beneath the bridge. Outside of the 80-foot spans, restricted area buoys will be placed to indicate no-entry points beneath the bridge where work is being conducted. Additional danger buoys will be placed in the area to identify hazardous conditions related to the renovation project. Vessel operators need to be extremely cautious in this area during construction. Wildlife Law Enforcement Officers will routinely patrol the area to educate vessel operators about these new restrictions and safety measures.
