RALEIGH, N.C. (Aug. 29, 2013) — The comment period for providing input in how the N.C. Wildlife Resources Commission should manage seven of its game lands over the next 10 years ends Aug. 31.
In July and early August, the Commission held seven public meetings seeking input in developing management plans for the following game lands: Sandhills, Holly Shelter, Lower Roanoke River, Suggs Mill Pond, R. Wayne-Bailey Caswell, Sandy Mush and Green River.
Staff will use public input from the meeting to help guide management and user activities on game lands for the next 10 years.
“We are seeking input from all users of our game lands and others who are interested in how the properties are managed,” said Lands Program Manager Isaac Harrold. “These meetings are not just for hunters and anglers. They are for wildlife watchers and photographers, birding groups, hikers, kayakers and others who have interest in our game lands. Everyone is encouraged to provide input.”
Through its N.C. Game Lands Program, the Commission manages more than 2 million acres of public and private lands for hunters, anglers, trappers and other outdoor enthusiasts to enjoy.
Attendance at the meetings was good and, according to Harrold, the comments received so far have been insightful.
“We’ll definitely be accepting comments and holding more public meeting at some future point in conjunction with the development of additional game land management plans,” Harrold said, noting that current and future plan development will focus on properties owned by the Wildlife Commission.
