BREVARD, N.C. (Sept. 14, 2017) — The N.C. Wildlife Resources Commission will host a free, family-friendly event celebrating fishing, hunting and wildlife conservation on Sept. 23, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., at the Pisgah Center for Wildlife Education in Brevard.

The event is one of six the Commission is offering to mark National Hunting and Fishing Day. Coinciding with National Hunting and Fishing Day, Gov. Roy Cooper has proclaimed Sept. 23, 2017 as National Hunting and Fishing Day in North Carolina, recognizing the many and varied social, cultural, economic and ecological benefits of hunting and angling. Read the entire proclamation issued by Cooper today.

Center staff has scheduled a variety of activities and exhibits for all ages and skill levels that include fly-casting and tying and a pellet range. Other events and demonstrations are a Backyard Bass game, the Huntmaster blind, and trout cooking over an open fire. For more information, contact Lee Sherrill at 828-877-4423.

The Pisgah Center for Wildlife Education is partnering with the Federation of Fly Fishers, Trout Unlimited, N.C. Trappers Association, Ducks Unlimited, Wild Turkey Federation, American Veteran’s Outdoors, Appalachian Quakers and Quality Deer Management to host this year’s National Hunting and Fishing Day event.

National Hunting and Fishing Day occurs every fourth Saturday in September and is a nationwide grassroots effort that promotes outdoor sports and wildlife conservation. This year, Richard Childress, NHFD’s Honorary Chairman, is asking hunters and anglers to help create the next generation of conservationists by participating in a new NHFD challenge, “Take the Pledge.” By “pledging” to take someone hunting, fishing or target shooting from Aug. 14 through Sept. 23, 2017, participants will be entered in a drawing for a chance to win a Richard Childress Racing VIP race weekend package or the Ultimate Outdoor Experience. Visit www.nhfday.org/ for more information. Visit the Commission’s National Hunting and Fishing Day page for more information on events, including activities, demonstration and exhibits.

The Pisgah Center is located near Brevard, just south of Asheville, alongside the Davidson River in Transylvania County. It features nature trails and five large aquariums representing different aquatic habitats. Visitors to the center can walk next door to the Bobby N. Setzer Fish Hatchery, where trout are raised in 54 raceways. The center’s hours of operation are 8 a.m.-4:45 p.m., Monday through Saturday from April through November and Monday through Friday from December through March. For more information, call 828-877-4423.
