RALEIGH, N.C. (Jan. 31, 2013) — A Marine Recreational Fishing Forum will be held Feb. 16, from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m., at N.C. State University's McKimmon Center in Raleigh. N.C. Sea Grant organized the free event, which is designed for recreational anglers, fisheries scientists, resource managers, elected and appointed officials, and others interested in North Carolina’s marine recreational fishing.

Speakers include Chad Thomas,coastal fisheries supervisor for the N.C. Wildlife Resources Commission, who will discuss catch-and-release fishing for striped bass on the Roanoke River,and Louis Daniel, director of the N.C. Division of Marine Fisheries, who will hold an hour-long “Ask-a-Director” session.

N. C. Wildlife Resources Commission biologists work closely with the Division of Marine Fisheries in management of migratory sport fish. The forum gives the public an opportunity to learn how government agencies partner with university researchers and anglers to promote recreational fishing on the coast.

The fishing forum agenda includes topics such as:

  • economics of recreational fishing in the marine environment;
  • the difference in fish survivability between recreational discards and catch-and-release; and,
  • regulators’ roles in managing recreational angling.

The forum can be viewed online live on the day of the event at: tinyurl.com/a36qybz.The live stream will allow viewers to pose questions and interact with forum speakers. Viewers will need Microsoft Silverlight (www.microsoft.com/silverlight) on their computers to watch the live stream.

“The recreational fishing forum is a unique opportunity to have a discussion outside of the regulatory arena on hot topics of interest to anglers,” said Susan White, Sea Grant executive director. “By working with anglers to identify topics and potential speakers, the forum provides a great opportunity to improve engagement and gather input from the marine recreational fishing community.”

Lunch is provided for attendees, so pre-registration for this free event is required by 5 p.m., Feb. 8. Register at www.surveymonkey.com/s/recfishforum_reg to attend. Sea Grant also is encouraging registration for online viewers to ensure viewers will receive the live stream link and forum follow-up materials.
