FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. (May 31, 2013) — The N.C. Wildlife Resources Commission is offering a variety of free fishing-related events and workshops in June at the John E. Pechmann Fishing Education Center in Fayetteville.
On June 1, the “Take A Kid Fishing” event will run from 8 a.m. until 1 p.m., and is open to all ages, although only participants 15 years old and younger are eligible to enter a statewide drawing for a chance to win one of more than 153 fishing-related prizes. The “Take A Kid Fishing event” is one of 31 that gets under way this Saturday to celebrate National Fishing and Boating Week 2013. Registration is on site the day of the event.
At the Fishing Lanyard Crafting Workshop, which is scheduled for June 14 starting at 7 p.m., participants will create their own fishing lanyard to take home.
“A fishing lanyard is a great alternative to a fishing vest because you can hang it around your neck and have all your favorite fishing accessories and tools right at your fingertips,” said Tom Carpenter, education specialist with the Wildlife Commission. “This fun activity is a great way to spend time with the kids and create something as a family activity. A fishing lanyard makes a great Father’s Day gift that is sure to get plenty of use over the years.”

On June 15 from 9 a.m. to noon, Pechmann Center staff will host a Father’s Day/Family Fishing event open to children and their families. Participants can bring their own fishing equipment and bait — natural bait only, but no minnows allowed. A limited number of free loaner rods and reels will be available on a first-come, first-serve basis. This catch-and-release event is open to all ages and registration is on site the day of the event.
Immediately following the Father’s Day/Family Fishing event, from noon until 2 p.m., a Fly-Casting Discovery Course will be held for novice fly anglers. Knowledgeable instructors will teach participants fly-casting, false casting and roll casting, using a variety of techniques. The fly-casting course features one-on-one instruction and the use of casting aids that emphasize the fundamentals of fly-casting.
Participants may bring their own equipment or borrow loaner rods and reels from the Pechmann Center. Because of the one-to-one ratio of instructors to participants, class size is limited to six participants and pre-registration is strongly encouraged. A Basic Rod Building Course is schedule for June 29 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Participants will build a 6-foot medium action spinning rod from an IM6 blank, which they may keep at the end of the course. All tools and materials are provided. The course is limited to 15 students. Because of limited space availability and popularity of this course, pre-registration is required by contacting Carpenter.
The John E. Pechmann Fishing Education Center is located at 7489 Raeford Road, across from Lake Rim. Wildlife Commission staff at the Pechmann Center conducts fishing workshops, events and clinics throughout the year. Most programs are free and open to the public.
