Chet Clark Named Northeastern Region Hunter Education Specialist

RALEIGH, N.C. (March 25, 2013) — The N.C. Wildlife Resources Commission has selected Chester “Chet” Clark to be the Hunter Education Specialist for Hertford, Gates, Currituck, Camden, Pasquotank, Perquimans, Chowan, Bertie, Martin, Washington, Tyrrell, Dare and Hyde counties.

A resident of Jarvisburg in Currituck County, Clark will be responsible for providing instruction in hunter ethics and responsibility, wildlife management and conservation, firearms, wildlife identification, survival and first aid, specialty hunting and tree stand safety.

Clark replaces David Denton, who retired after 29 years of service. Clark was previously a wildlife educator at the Outer Banks Center for Wildlife Education in Corolla.

“Hunting education is so much more than firearms safety, although that is a key aspect that I will stress,” said Clark. “But these classes and workshops also build support and enthusiasm for conservation. My goal is to introduce and involve as many people we can in such a wholesome, rewarding pursuit like hunting. I guess you could say, ‘There’s room for everybody in the outdoors.’”

The N.C. Wildlife Resources Commission employs nine district hunter education specialists across the state. The hunter education specialists are organized within the Commission’s Law  Enforcement Division where they work closely with wildlife enforcement officers to coordinate and teach free hunter education courses in all 100 counties.

All first-time hunting license buyers in North Carolina must complete a hunter education course successfully.

“Hunting is one of the safest and most widely enjoyed outdoor recreational activities in North Carolina,” said Travis Casper, the state hunting education coordinator. “We want to encourage future generations to hunt safely, and the Hunter Education Program is glad to have Chet working with us to achieve these goals.”
