Caswell Game Land Shooting Range Now Open to Public
The Caswell Shooting Range opened on Aug. 22. Hours of operation are: 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Thursday through Saturday and from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. on Sunday.

YANCEYVILLE, N.C. (Aug. 22, 2014) — The N.C. Wildlife Resources Commission held a ribbon cutting today to celebrate the opening of the Caswell Shooting Range, located on the agency’s R. Wayne Bailey-Caswell Game Land in Yanceyville.

Several Commission employees, along with Wildlife Commissioner Tom Berry, N.C. Rep. Bert Jones and Caswell County Commissioner Kenneth Travis, cut the ceremonial green ribbon, officially opening the only Commission-owned public shooting range in the northern Piedmont area.

The public shooting range, which is free to use, has a 100-yard rifle range with five shooting lanes and a 25-yard pistol range with five shooting lanes. It is universally accessible with a concrete parking space and paved sidewalks to the shooting shelters and target areas.

The Wildlife Commission funded the construction of the shooting range using hunting license receipts.  Maintenance and operation of the range will be funded using Pittman-Robertson funds, which are 10 percent excise taxes collected from manufacturers of guns and ammunition.

The Caswell Shooting Range is the third range the Commission has constructed this year to provide the public with places to shoot. Range construction is part of the agency’s mission to provide statewide public shooting opportunities, according to Erik Christofferson, chief of the Commission’s Division of Engineering and Lands Management.

“There is a huge need for these types of facilities and today’s opening of the Caswell Shooting Range is yet one more recreational opportunity for our sportsmen,” Christofferson said. “On many of these ranges, we have worked very closely with the National Rifle Association and we are extremely grateful for its continued support.”

The Caswell Shooting Range is located at 3670 N.C. Highway 86 South in Yanceyville. It is open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Thursday through Saturday, and from 1-5 p.m. on Sunday. It is closed Monday through Wednesday and during Special Permit Hunts on the game land. Dates for Special Permit Hunts will be posted at the range and on the Commission’s website, www.ncwildlife.org/hunting, at least two weeks before the hunts.
