Applications for permit waterfowl hunts are available Sept. 1

RALEIGH, N.C. (Aug. 30) – Beginning Sept. 1, the N.C.Wildlife Resources Commission will have permit waterfowl hunts available online at www.ncwildlife.org/permithunt, by calling(888) 248-6834, 8 a.m.-5 p.m. on weekdays, or by visiting a Wildlife Service Agent. The deadline for most permit hunts is Oct. 1.

In response to suggestions from waterfowl hunters, the Commission has created a system of blinds on North River, J. Morgan Futch and Spring Creek impoundments. Staff has constructed high-quality floating blinds that will be in place throughout the late waterfowl season. The blinds, which accommodate up to three hunters and feature a dog porch, are located in areas hunters typically have used in the past.

While the application process for these three impoundments will remain the same, applicants must select a blind in their hunt choice(s).

“The implementation of blinds on these selected areas should address several comments and suggestions we have received over the years,” said Tommy Hughes, Coastal EcoRegion supervisor.“Hunters will know where they are hunting, but the presence of these blinds will eliminate hunters being too close, remove early morning races to hunting spots, and reduce the need for hunters to feel like they must be on the area at 4 a.m.”

The blinds also will allow for additional hunting opportunities on two of the three areas, according to Hughes.

“By reducing disturbance on these areas before sunrise, waterfowl using the area will not be flushed from the area as is a common problem now,” Hughes said. “This should benefit hunters as well as waterfowl.”
